During the County Council meeting on March 12th 2018, a motion I submitted and proposed which called for Government funding assistance for a new public library in Stillorgan was passed by councillors. This request was accepted by the Department of Rural and Community Development with €1.5 million now secured for the project.
The project for a new public library in Stillorgan had been included in the council’s Three Year Capital Programme 2018-2020, as presented to councillors in March, however a certain funding stream for the project had not at that time been identified at that point. With the Government award of €1.5 million, the council also allocated fresh funding to the project in February 2019 so now the project is considered ready to go.
My motion specifically called upon the Minister for Rural and Community Development to consider funding support for a new library for Stillorgan as a priority proposal for future Libraries Capital Investment Programme support should additional funding for this programme become identified by the Government. This programme had been used already in terms of providing €3 million for a library upgrade in Ennis, Co.Clare and €1 million similarly for a library service in Kevin Street.
I am delighted for the community of Stillorgan that the Department of Rural and Community Development subsequently approved this request made on foot of the council resolution.
Such additional funding as part of the programme will expedite the building of a new library in Stillorgan, which is much warranted given the age of the existing library structure. 70 new housing units are set to be built in the vicinity of the existing outdated Stillorgan Library structure in tandem with its construction phase.
