During the County Council meeting on March 12th, a motion I submitted and proposed which called for Government funding assistance for a new public library in Stillorgan was passed by councillors.
The project for a new public library in Stillorgan has been included in the council’s Three Year Capital Programme 2018-2020, however a certain funding stream for the project has not yet been identified. It is envisaged that new housing units being built in the vicinity of the existing outdated Stillorgan Library structure would provide an opportunity for a new library building also to form part of the overall construction project at this location.
My motion specifically calls upon the Minister for Rural and Community Affairs to consider funding support for a new library for Stillorgan as a priority proposal for future Libraries Capital Investment Programme support should additional funding for this programme be identified by the Government. This programme has been used already in terms of providing €3 million for a library upgrade in Ennis, Co.Clare and €1 million similarly for a library service in Kevin Street.
I believe that such additional funding as part of the programme would help to expedite the building of a new library in Stillorgan, which is much warranted given the age of the existing library structure.
